Assessment & ICG lymphography
A precise map of lymphatic function helps move from a general diagnosis to an individual treatment strategy.
Your first assessment
First, we listen and examine.
The pattern of swelling matters as much as its size.
We review how swelling affects daily life, its cause, duration and progression, infections, discomfort, heaviness, mobility, skin changes, previous cancer treatment or surgery, current compression and the response to specialist therapy.
Examination helps assess distribution, pitting, tissue quality, fibrosis and fatty enlargement, while looking for features that may suggest another diagnosis or need further investigation.
Real-time imaging
What is ICG lymphography?
A small amount of fluorescent dye makes superficial lymphatic flow visible to a near-infrared camera.
The scan does not use ionising radiation. It can show functioning lymphatic channels as well as patterns of impaired flow or dermal backflow, helping the team understand where transport remains effective and where it is obstructed.
Treatment planning
Imaging informs; it does not decide.
- Good-quality functioning superficial channels may support an LVA plan.
- Limited usable channels or more advanced dysfunction may lead the team to consider lymph node transfer, BioBridge or another strategy.
- Predominantly fatty enlargement may make liposuction more relevant than a drainage procedure.
- Findings are interpreted alongside examination, symptoms and therapy history.
Before the scan
Tell us about previous reactions.
Reactions to ICG are uncommon, but they can occur.
Tell the team about any previous reaction to ICG or contrast agents, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The procedure, alternatives and individual risks will be explained before consent.
